Please refer to Managing the risk of psychosocial hazards at work: Code of Practice 2022 (the Code) as supporting reading material to this course.
Introduction
The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) defines ‘health’ to include both physical and psychological health. This means that where the WHS Act imposes a duty in relation to ‘health’, employers must manage risks to both physical and psychological health, so far as is reasonably practicable.
The Safe Work Australia 2024 report states, in 2022-2023 – mental health conditions accounted for 9% of all serious worker’s compensations claims. A 36.9% increase since 2017-2018. Serious mental health disorders were mainly associated to work pressure, workplace violence and workplace bullying.
Creating a psychologically safe work environment, requires an understanding of psychosocial safety, how to identify psychosocial hazards and how to manage and respond to psychosocial risks.
